On 19th December 2017,56 members of the U3A attended and enjoyed the Annual Christmas Party in The Royal British Legion Club,Audley Road,Newport. Members enjoyed a comprehensive bu et that catered for all tastes and not a great deal remained when the party ended. Members were further entertained by a very interesting and informative presentation by Bev and Ray Langton who covered the History and Development of Morris Dancing.

Contrary to popular belief,Morris Dancing was a relatively modern invention having its origins in Victorian times although the tradition of the “Maypole” harks back many hundreds of years. Folklore gives many explanations for Morris Dancing but no-one really knows the origins with any degree of certainty. There are many, similar dances across Europe and members were shown examples of various styles of dancing.

Everyone agreed that the presentation was informative and entertaining and greatly enhanced the afternoon’s festivities. The whole afternoon was a tting end to another great year for Newport Shropshire U3A.

The next meeting will take place on 20th February when Kathleen Turner will present “Wonderful Music Boxes,Past and Present.”

Kathleen will bring along six di erent types of “Music Box” and talk about the history of mechanical music from AD900 through the 18th Century, the Victorian period and early 20th Century to the present day. She will play the boxes as she progresses through her talk and nish with a 20 note 31 pipe Ra n Street Organ playing a piece of classical music, followed by a couple of songs people can join in with if they wish. The presentation will nish with a Radetzky March to clap along to.
