The Geology of Stafford By Paul Green

The solid geology of Stafford consists of two Triassic rock formations:the Sherwood Sandstone and Mercia Mudstone,formed at a time when the area of the Midlands was in the tropics. The mudstones contain evaporite deposits that resulted from the evaporation of sea and lake water,and are the basis of Sta ord’s former salt industry. The two rock formations are separated by a geological fracture called the Hopton Fault that can be traced through the town. The di ering hardness of the two rock formations has a ected the physical landscape on either side of the fault.

The super cial geology of Stafford consists of three types of glacial deposits as well as recent river alluvium. The resulting geography of gravel terraces and wetlands has strongly influenced the historic growth of the town since prehistoric times. Stafford Castle sits on a hill capped by glacial outwash gravel and the historic core of the town sits on glacial gravel almost completely surrounded by wetland. To a trained eye,these features are clearly visible and add to the interest of a walk through the town centre.
